Nothing feels better than air conditioning when the weather is hot. But sometimes your AC isn’t working the way that it should. Below are ten signs that it’s time for you to replace your AC unit.
The point of getting your home’s air conditioner isn’t so that it can simply look cool. You want it to help your home stay cool when it’s hot out. So if your air conditioner is blowing warm air, chances are that you need to have someone look at your unit.
Another sign that your unit is on the way out is the air flow is weak. Maybe you’re turning it on and you’re feeling cool air but it’s not very strong, so it isn’t circulating well throughout your room. This often is a sign that the compressor on the unit is failing. It also can mean that there are issues with the ducts. So it’s a good idea to have someone come out and take a look.
Your thermostat is your AC’s command center and it tells the unit the amount of cool air that should be generated as well as taking the measurements to ensure that the job is being done. If your unit’s not turning on or if it’s running for just short lengths of time before it turns off, it’s possible that you have a broken thermostat so it’s not accurately gauging whether or not your unit’s working. It’s time to have someone come out and look.
If you are hearing grinding, scraping or squealing that is coming out of the unit while its running, you could have a problem that’s inside your unit with a slipping belt. If this is the case, it’s a serious problem that means you need to call someone since pieces that are loose can damage other parts that are costly.
Your unit shouldn’t smell bad. If this is the case, something is gone wrong. If the smell is pungent, it usually means that your unit’s wire insulation’s burned out. If the smell is musty, there is a good chance that there is mold inside your unit or maybe even in your ductwork. This should be professionally diagnosed quickly since this can make the household sick.
If you’ve been having a technician come out a lot during a few months, it’s probably time for you to buy a new unit. By the time you have someone come out the amount of times that you have had them coming out, you could have spent a good chunk of money on a new one.
One of the things that your AC should be doing is reducing your home’s humidity. If you are running your AC and the humidity isn’t going down, it’s a good chance that it needs to be repaired.
Moisture that is leaking around or in the HVAC system is a huge problem. In cases that are most severe, this will mean that refrigerant is leaking. Freon is poisonous. So you want to make sure that you are calling a professional to repair your unit. In those cases that are less serious, it could be water since that tube that is responsible for condensation disposal is broken or blocked. You’ll know this is a problem in a few ways. Sometimes you’re going to see water that is leaking from the unit and coming to the floor. Another sign is ice inside the HVAC. This can be found on the refrigerant lines that are running outside of its condenser. These are both signs that you should call a professional.
When your power bill is suddenly shooting up even though you’re not running your unit a lot, this is another big sign that you should replace or repair your AC. There is more than one cause for this issue, like the ductwork of your AC has leaks, your thermostat switch is broken or your unit is too old. No matter what the problem is, you will want to replace or repair your unit.
If you have had your AC for ten years or more, chances are that it’s time to replace it. The longest that an AC unit will usually last is 10 years. So think about how long you have had yours. If its ten years or more, chances are its time to retire your unit.
These are the signs that you should replace or repair your AC. If you have noticed any of these signs, it’s a good idea to call a repairman to see what they can do for you. Or maybe you just want to buy a new one.
