Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers – What’s the Difference?

It can be hard to have just the right amount of humidity inside your home. during the year, based on how humid or dry your air is, you can use a dehumidifier or humidifier to make it more comfortable.

Sometimes it can be hard to decide which is right. The humidifier will add moisture to your air when it’s too dry (under 35%) and the dehumidifier removes moisture from the air when it’s too humid (over 50%).

To figure out the needs of your home, use a hygrometer, which reads the humidity in the air.

Humidifier versus Dehumidifier

A humidifier and a dehumidifier will be used during the year so that mold and nasal congestion can be prevented.

Humidifier

  • Will increase the air’s moisture
  • Often is used during the winter months since the air’s dry
  • Helps keep the skin from getting dry and helps with controlling nasal congestion and allergies

Dehumidifier

  • Will decrease the air’s moisture
  • Often used during the summer months when the air’s humid and warm.
  • Keeps allergies and headaches at bay by preventing mold and mildew build up.

Humidifier Types

There are just two kinds of humidifiers – cool mist and warm mist. The steam (or warm mist) humidifiers work with boiling water. This releases the steam directly into your air. The cool mist ones use rotating discs or fans so the water is evaporated and brought into your air.

A humidifier has to be regularly cleaned so that mildew and mold don’t grow. It’s essential that you use water that is distilled and dump additional water from the reservoir when you are finished using it.

Dehumidifier Types

There’s four main dehumidifier types – electronic, desiccant, ionic and refrigerative. The refrigerative, which are also known as mechanical are the most used type. This type will use a fan so that moisture is pulled from the air and over top of the refrigerated coil.

It’s best to have one of each type in your home so that your air is as comfortable as possible all year round.
